The Public Works Department includes five operations’ divisions: Garage, Public Services, Solid Waste Management, Wastewater & Water Treatment Plants.

Public Works Director Kevin Eason supervises and coordinates these division’s activities and provides technical assistance to the City Manager and other departments. Citizen inquiries and complaints regarding public works functions are received and processed through the administrative office located in the Public Works Service Center at 1100 Vance Street (336-349-1070). The Administrative Office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Three of the divisions are housed in facilities at this address.

 

Public Services Division

This division is responsible for all local City streets (81 miles) and storm sewer collection system (estimated 35 line miles), the water distribution (105 line miles) and the sewage collection system (90 line miles). It is managed by a superintendent with a staff of 30 employees. Services include local traffic signs and signals, street maintenance & sweeping, snow removal, seasonal (November - December) loose leaf pick-up, sidewalk and curb replacement, installing and servicing of water and sewer connections, and hydrant repair and replacement. This division also operates the City-owned Greenview Cemetery (42 acres) and provides most all City-parks’ maintenance. The City of Reidsville is committed to a program of timely maintaining, repairing, and replacing its infrastructure to effectively serve the citizens of our community.

 
Solid Waste Management
   
  This division is responsible promoting a healthy environment and a pleasing community appearance through the timely collection and proper disposal of solid waste. Its operations’ staff of 16 employees is managed by a superintendent. This division provides weekly (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) automated curbside residential garbage collection. Bulk trash, boxes, bags, old furniture, etc., are collected weekly in residential areas. This division also collects brush (no longer than 6 feet), yard waste, bagged grass clippings and leaves, all at curbside, weekly. The division also provides twice weekly commercial collection for downtown businesses. The City operates a recycling program for "white goods" (stoves, washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc.) and collects these items on the brush route schedules (appliance doors must be removed from these items prior to collection). Other recycling activities include a Recycling Drop-off Center, composting, and brush/limbs mulching.

Garage Division
   
  This division services all City-owned vehicles and large equipment. It is managed by a superintendent with a staff of 5 trained and experienced automotive workers performing a wide range of repair work for all City departments. It services all types of vehicles and equipment ranging from weed eaters and police cars to off-road heavy equipment (approximately 225 units). An automated Fuel Management System controls fuel dispensing and usage recordation for all City vehicles. This system reflects the City’s commitment to acquire and use contemporary technology in accountable service delivery.
   
Wastewater Treatment Plant
   
  Located at 407 Broad Street , the Wastewater Treatment Plant, expanded in 1991 to daily design treatment capacity of 7.5 million gallons, is dedicated to the quality of North Carolina ’s water resources. This division is also managed under a contract arrangement with Hydro Management Services, Inc., a U. S. Water Company, by a superintendent with six operations staff and eight maintenance staff shared with the Water Treatment Plant. The divisional responsibilities include plant and sewer pump station operations, maintenance laboratory and industrial/commercial pretreatment compliance. Our plant’s personnel are committed to public education about environment conservation, an issue of concern, both ecologically and financially.
   
Water Treatment Plant
   
  The Water Treatment Plant and operations are located on Reid Lake Road (SR 2445). This division is responsible for producing a safe supply of water that meets all state and federal standards along with operating the City’s system of finished water storage including four elevated tanks. It is managed under a contract arrangement with Hydro Management Services, Inc., a U. S. Water Company, by a superintendent with five operations staff and eight maintenance staff shared with the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The 1980 plant has a daily design treatment capacity of 9 million gallons. The City’s main water reservoir, Lake Reidsville is a 720-acre lake also used as a recreation facility by the Reidsville Recreation Department. The present water treatment facilities are projected to meet the City’s needs through the year 2030.
